Antique Lumber

More and more I notice reclaimed lumber being used in corporate buildings, and recently new cabin I stayed in had all the floors, mantles, and furniture made from wormy oak. It is so refreshing to see the popularity growing. Having made several attempts at taking down buildings myself and entering the wholesale business I feel a real appreciation for the lumber. Unfortunately for me I entered business with a greedy person who ran off with an entire semi load of pristine heart pine, leaving me with a negative profit. So since I cannot afford to take down buildings full time I look forward to smaller projects from time to time as well as buying and selling lumber which other people have taken down and denailed.

I've written several pages with the information I gained during a six month stint taking down log cabins and several barns. I hope to help others by putting the information out there. I've also put together some information regarding the identification of chestnut because it looks very similar to a lot of other species when it's covered in hay, dirt, etc in the field.

I have sold lumber online using 2 different websites, www.sticktrade.com and www.woodplanet.com.

I profit nothing from either website, just mention them because after spending hundreds of hours online posting lumber I had for sale at the time, both of these websites returned a dozen+ calls and a few sales. Price directly affects the speed lumber sells, and on these websites you can sell it cheaply wholesale to large companies, or you may find an individual buyer who will pay a little closer to retail price. Typically the individuals I've come across were buying the lumber rough wholesale, then having the milling done locally to save money over what typical companies charge which can be $10-$25+ per square foot. Oak typically sells for $1 or so per bdft rough, you'll see people asking a lot more, but they have the same postings month after month and each time it drops 10% or so. The cost of storage alone is worth selling it quickly in many situations.
